What do a pickle jar, a paper route, a hockey team, a seamstress and a family kitchen have in common? The idealized Canadian experience? The emphasis on home and family? Perhaps, but look further!

The apparent representation of the ideal in the pieces selected for A PRAIRIE SNAPSHOT is compromised by a psychological edge that hints at other realities. For example, the relationship between the woman and child in Richard Hines’s Sliced Apple (2005) suggests a disconnect; and the crucified hockey player watched over by Bambi in Diana Thorneycroft’s Martyrdom at the Rink (2005) is a disturbing picture of a favourite winter pastime.

Artists featured in this installation: Kristin Bjornerud, Victor Cicansky, Wally Dion, Marcel Dzama, Joe Fafard, Neil Farber, Richard Hines, Julie Oh, Joseph Reyes, Cindy Stelmackowich, Diana Thorneycroft.
